Ah, Portland, where it's totally normal that businessmen drop everything to go on a bike ride in the middle of the day, because hey, Friday! and not raining! and really, that's what you do. (Sadly, that's not what I do, because I work for a corporate monolith with East Coast "work ethic" kind of values, so I'm the one in the office being told to do business dealings with someone while the call keeps dropping out because they are on a bike ride.)

I thought I would share with you a selection of the varied free Portland activities I have to choose from this weekend, aside from all the ordinary things like the Portland Marathon and the Greek Festival and Ralph Nader giving a talk at Powell's:

+ For the business gentleman I was calling all afternoon: A community appreciation of the art and craft of bicycling. Very Portland.
+ A Gathering on Economic and Ecological Crises, which should be a rollicking good time for all.
+ Cthulucon: 2009. Come for the cosmic horror, stay for the unnameable fear! CTHULUCON!
+ The Cheesefest. Actual cheese.
+ Soon followed by Portland Baconfest 2009, where our vegan-friendly city spends a whole day explaining how bacon is not at all the same thing as meat and does not count. I am told it is sponsored by something called The Meat Show.

I get my what's happening info from Around the Sun Blog, Portland on the Cheap and Dave Knows: Portland. (The other place Dave knows, FYI, is Elko, Nevada.) I then feel happy to live in such a quirky place, before forgetting all about these events and spending my weekend doing remedial science fiction reading (DUNE for the first time, currently) while snuggled between boy and dog. You know it's bad when your hermit father practically begs you to go clubbing for 80s video music night while you're saying I got up at five a.m. every day this week and have been on conference calls all day and Dad, seriously, can't I JUST STAY HOME AND READ DUNE IN THE BATHTUB FOR THE THIRD FRIDAY IN A ROW WITHOUT BEING CONSIGNED TO A LIFE AS A TOTAL SHUT-IN!?

In other news, I'm a total shut-in.

Also, I have watched Glee seven thousand times. FYI: no, there's no fanfic coming (canon is still not a defense for song lyrics in fanfic!) and I am THOROUGHLY EMBARRASSED by how I really kind of can't wait until somebody makes a fanvid to Taylor Swift's "Fifteen." Also, no 'ship, really, because the show is so perfect and they're kids and I'm loving the teen pathos, and Rachel's adorable Love Of Finn is really so adorable, but, you know, he should probably be that first crush or first boyfriend she never totally gets over but doesn't actually be with forever omg because, god love him, he's kind of a dope. BUT I LOVE HIM. Why do I pretend I won't write fanfic about things and that I won't use song lyrics as a means of plot advancement? AUGHHHH.

My new plan: retail therapy.

I know, I know, this is normally the sort of plan that doesn't go along with all my flailing and hand-waving about how my job is kind of up in the air (consider that a Realty TV spoiler!!1!) and how I have no money and want to buy a house someday, but bear with me! (Also: the next time I go "I HAVE NO MOONEEEEEYS!" feel free to slap me with this post to remind me of where it all went.)

So anyway, yesterday was my regular doctor's visit, blah blah blood-pressure-crazy-meds-anorexia-cakes... )

So to reward myself for the massive indignity of being forced to drink gatorade and eat things or else be drugged into oblivion, I went out and bought DVDs! Books! Discuss and enable my spending habits! )

Yay! So yes, a few irresponsible swipes of plastic, but think: hundreds of hours of gleee! Fewer side effects than upping my crazy meds, too, and I literally skipped back to the car with so much joy.

So there. All my Eastern meditating & yoga & holistic diet didn't help me all that much, so we're going full-on Western now: shopping, drugs & gatorade.

God help me.

Something random that makes me happy:

Sleeves I can pull over my hands. I have a great bunch of stretchy turtlenecks that looks snazzy, and the sleeves stretch over my hands. I love that feeling of hands balled up in fabric, even if it looks silly.

What is something random that makes you happy?

HI.

THINGS THAT ARE AWESOME:

1) Star Trek: Voyager, season 6! After the season premiere OF HOLY RAGE, it has been an entire season of gleee! I don't get it. Happy pills in the replicators? Don't know! Don't care! Photonic fleas! Am happy!

2) OMG, [livejournal.com profile] angel_grace sent me Jake 2.0 DVDs!!! OMG! WITH COVERS! OMG. I have been waiting for this moment for yeeeeeears. Jake 2.0 for my very own forever omg yay! This gleee is shared with the rest of my household, because now we can delete the series off our DVR and start recording Golden Girls again.

3) Good things are happening to my friends. This pleases me.

4) I spent my afternoon averting disaster with difficult buyers and charmed them to death, by alternating my "hee hee! I am a harmless secretary!" voice with my "MWAHAHA, revel in all the things I know about COMMON AIR SHAFTS and DAMPERS and FEATHERING CONCRETE!" Yes, there was rocking, and I think it's all due to this cat macro that is my computer background. (My job? Deals a lot with buyer walk-through inspections. A LOT. Every day, someone says this to me. Well, pretty much.)

5) I have a sekrit nefarious fandom plan that is SEKRIT and NEFARIOUS and making me very happy. But I can't implement it until I finish real estate school. The joy, however, continues.

6) Did I mention that Voyager is full of silly Happy Voyager-ish joy lately? Because it totally is!

Too tired to watch new 'lantis! Save for weekend, yay.

THIS MORNING?? I RIPPED OPEN ONE OF MY TOOTH HOLES FROM THE WISDOM TEETH OF DOOM. EATING CORN POPS.

I AM FULL OF ALL-CAPPED RAGE.

Yeah, the day pretty much went downhill from there. I was trying to be positive! But cars were CHASING ME in crosswalks! And then mean people mocked me OUT LOUD on the street! And I totally tweaked out at work because of the INSANE STRESS of my brain being made of crazy! And did I mention the part where THE WISDOM TEETH OF DOOM THAT WERE KIND OF HEALED IS NOW A GAPING WOUND AGAIN!? From CORN POPS!?

OH DUDE.

Things That Are Awesome:

1) [livejournal.com profile] calleigh_j WROTE JAKE 2.0 FIC! OMFG. Aaaaaa I am full of SQUEEE.

2) TEMPTATION ISLAND, with [livejournal.com profile] mystic_isles000, who is hilarious. Totally Closeted Boy (Named Kaya!) on the show: "And then I was thinking about my girlfriend doing something wild with ANOTHER GUY-" Gira: "And that made me want to do something wild with another guy!" We've been watching too much Playing It Straight.

3) CORN POPS OF DOOM. Aughhhh! They are so TASTY. And yet LETHAL.

4) I have a plan to combat depression with girl-powered Zen! It is a Good Plan!

5) ... MY RATS ARE CUTE!

Old pictures, but PROOF OF THE CUTE! )

So here's what I'm actually thinking: I could use one or more of the following: 1) a less stressful job, 2) better medication, 3) a hole in the head.

However, that is counter-productive! Therefore, NEW PLAN that I will call gleee 2.0: Sister and I have come up with a fantabulous game to keep ourselves positive on our Commute Of Long Assedness, the Five Things I Love About ____ game. Kind of like the "omg, have rage about THIS!" meme that was so big last year, except... the opposite, and in bullet point format.

I'll start!

5 things I love about [livejournal.com profile] lifelongfling:
yay )

Pleez give me things/people/fandom items/vague concepts to have love for! (You are allowed to vote for yourself.)

joy me!

So I was totally going to post a flail-y post from work all "omg I am still sick and I am scared of humans and there is too much work and I want to hide and die for am failure at life!", but then decided to try to manifest some joy instead!

Items of unexpected joy so far include:

Item 1: The developer made the construction general supervisor give me my VERY OWN VOLTAGE DETECTOR! It lights up and makes sounds and looks like a giant pen and EVERYONE IS JEALOUS.

Item 2: [livejournal.com profile] a_linz wrote some really cute CSI fic that I read before work for my new shameful pairing of fluff! (Nick/Sara. SHUT UP.) Scroll down to the very bottom for some vignettes of randomness and cute and then join my support group omg.

Item 3: I can print from my work computer now. Real printing! And SCANNING!

Thus far, the militant campaign of gleee has been most successful! Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to provide me with MORE JOY! Comment-spam, comment-ficlets, haiku, pictures of furry animals, random bits of gleee from your own day, mentions of nonsensical things you like...

Please? :)
