More than 2 bucks for gas on the East Coast!? Don't we own an oil-producing country now?

Tell me about it! $2.50 on the west coast! You would think it might think about going down, but no. It's supposed to go even higher.

um we don't, nor will we ever, own Iraq
Our contribution to destabilizing Iraq and the Middle East in general is in fact indirectly responsible for the hike in gas prices

Heh. I'm glad. Sometimes snarkiness does not appropriately transmit over livejournal ;)

Hold on a second? That isn't true? But, but, oh damnit, my paradigm has shifted.

I assume most everything on lj is snarky. Safer that way, really. Leaves me my sanity. Sort of.

Welcome to my world. Good thing I don't have to drive 2 hours to get to where I do my field work or anything. Oh, wait...

I say, bring it on. We're still paying something like half European prices. And the higher gas prices go, the more likely it is that powerful folks will say, "Hey, wouldn't it be nifty if we weren't dependant on this non-renewable, politically messy, polluting fuel source? Let's do something about that." Here's hoping, anyway.

(Of course, I say this as a non-driver, so you can feel free to tell me to shove it.)

Quite right. I think folk like us (who still do drive) just feel indignant as we WANT those renewable clean energy sources and are willing to support whatever can bring them about, but at the same time, we've still gotta go to and from work (unless you bike - yay biking!), see our friends, hunt tunicates, and more. So we want change, we write our senators, we support sustainability wherever we can, we educate our friends and family, and we do whatever else we can, and we still get hit in the pocketbook.

So maybe this will finally make people wake up to what has been irking Californians more and more these past few years (I still remember two years ago paying more than $2/gal for the first time) and affect some change. I hope so. Actually, CA just got news that the governator is funding a network of hydrogen refuling stations. Not that we have hydrogen cars yet, but it gives me hope that finally the pissed-off-level is having an effect.

I just hope it changes before I have to buy a new car (and don't tell Horatio I even mentioned that!)

bring it on.... in the cities!

i'm all for price hikes in cities, where there are still some skeletal remains of public transportation systems. but out in the boonies where i live where there are minimal-to-no bus lines and the trains are boxcars that one can hop if one wishes and the farmers are poor enough as it is, we really need cheap gas until the powers that be come up with something better. goddess, i never thought i'd find myself arguing on this side of the debate...
