Okay, so now I'm back at DoveLewis with Celeste, who got her leg torn open and needs emergency sutures. She's happily munching a carrot, but I was a little perturbed by how I can see her whole thigh muscle. The vet hospital has some of the same people on staff as last night, and I can only hope that my file reads "incredibly unlucky rat owner" rather than "incredibly irresponsible."

New boy-who-needs-a-nickname has been very patient with my "um, yah, so for the second time in one weekend I cancel due to RATMERGENCY."

edit: Needs SURGERY. More than $500. And since she saw a vet it's animal abuse for me to just take her home and make her comfy, so no choice. I am now scary-ass broke, but Celeste will be ok (I hope - sometimes rats die of anaesthesia), and she will have a hilariously cute cone collar (on a RAT) so I'm trying not to freak out about food, and how I will buy it.

SRSLY. No more pets. REMIND ME.

*cuddles* Oh, jeez, 2008 is not a good year for rats thus far. It'll look up! It has to!

I hope so!!! I am on Super All-Night Rat Guard to make sure Celeste doesn't pull out her stitches. Seriously. I wrapped her up in a straitjacket made of that non-sticky medical tape stuff and popsicle sticks.

Damn...

Can't you just tell the vet, "Sorry, I shopped around and found a surgeon at Wal-Mart" and then go home and not be reported??

**hugs**

It ended up not being AS expensive, but still, um, lotsa moneys, super broke. Hopefully the rat will actually recover without pulling her stitches out and all will be ok! *hopes*

Oh, geez. :( I think at this point it'd be cheaper for you to get a vet license yourself.

Have you talked to the vet about the finances being a problem? They may not be able to offer any other option but putting her down, admittedly, but damn. You should not have to choose between being arrested for animal abuse, and eating.

I don't know how far people would really get arresting someone for abusing a rat, you know? But I didn't want to risk it, or have some label put in my file where I can nevarrr go back to the animal hospital.

I did talk to the vet about finances being a problem, and the total bill came out to $300 instead of $500. Which is $200 worth of bettar. The stitches are non-dissolving, tho, so I'll need to take her for a follow-up to another vet, but eh, what's done is done and hopefully she will be OK.

ITA. Please talk to your vet. Maybe they can offer a payment plan. Tell them you just can't afford this. It should not come down to this.

((hugs))

I did talk to them. No payment plan, but the total cost was reduced, woohoo! So I am still broke, but less direly so.
