It's very hard to lose a pet - and when you do (or at least, when I do) it gets you thinking about whether or not it's worth it. I think that I'll spare my kids the pain of watching a cherished pet die by just not letting them have a pet... but then I remember how much joy pets bring you when they live and know that the cliche is true. It's better to have loved and lost them then never loved at all.
