Operation Maternal Stargate Addiction, Stage I.
Mwah ha ha ha. On the dawning of the fourth week of Little Red's home convalescence, Operation Maternal Stargate Addiction (props to
fraiser_jackson for help with the Op title... *you* try coming up with clever Operation titles by yourself while baked out of your head on mono) has officially commenced. (I know, I know, I don't have enough to do with my life right now... but you already knew that.)
Although she read a little of "Second Chances", Mumsey has steadily refused to watch the show with me -- something about not wanting to know what they really looked like and not having to learn another sci-fi universe of whys and wherefores. I got her with "Window of Opportunity," which, in retrospect, really was the obvious choice. She *looooooves* Teal'c, like I knew she would. Hee.
Mumsey's initial thoughts...
on Jack: "Is he... weird? What's his deal?"
me: "No, no, he's just acting odd because he's in a time loop. And I think we might be supposed to take some unrequited love deal from this scene."
her: "I suppose that's reasonable."
on Sam: "Well *she's* cute. Looks like Talia Winters. And she talks like you."
me, trying to remember the last time I used 'subspace inversion field' in a sentence: "What?"
her: "So... she's this beautiful, brilliant, sweet-and-innocent type... *that* seems likely."
me: "If it makes you feel any better, her social skills could use some tweaking. But she does play the perfect card an awful lot."
her: "She's something of a male fantasy, isn't she?"
on Daniel: "I didn't expect him to be such a... geek. Is he always like this?"
me: "Not... always... but... he's a geek boy!"
her: "But how can you make him a romantic hero? Shouldn't he be... strong and brooding?"
me: "Mom, you *married* a geek boy."
her: "I did? Really? Wonder how that happened."
on Teal'c: "Is he like a Vulcan?"
on Janet: "Does she ever do anything else?"
on Daniel first introducing the happy-crazy-wild montage with the idea of "no consequences": "Okay, who are they going to go screw?" (hee! my *mom!*)
on Sam/Jack: "Is that actually on the show or is this one of those romances that you made up?"
me, with elaborate episode-y footnotes: "No, it's definitely on the show. They have to get together. It's like Mulder and Scully, except with less continuity."
her: "I thought you hated it when Mulder and Scully got together."
me: "Yeah... well I'm hoping they end the series before she gets pregnant and spineless this time. But they really really do need to get together and have lots of sex. You have no idea."
her: "Oh. Well, that should be fun."
on Daniel/Janet: "I'm confused. The geek and the nurse get together?"
on the Goa'uld: "So... evil Trills."
on the Tok'ra: "That sounds complicated. I don't want to know."
on whether she will watch this show again: "I want to see the one where they all confess their unrequited love and stuff."
me: "It's Canadian, too."
her: "Oh, fine, I'm getting hooked."
Clearly, this was only phase one. Anybody have any suggestions on a good Daniel episode (I have seasons 1 and 4 with me) that will make him look like less of a wussy? (allow me to take this juncture to preemptively tell
keenween to shut up. I *know* my TV Linguist Boyfriend is a wuss! But not *every* single minute.) Because, while it's freaking hilarious to have my mother yelling "Be quiet, Daniel!" at the TV all the time, I figure I should try and justify my crush *somehow*... and I get enough of that at my place. But really, any and all suggestions for a curriculum (break her into the crazy galactic war arc action gently... but keeping in mind she's in it for the romance -- I come by that honestly) will be most appreciated.
