Book #47: Sovereign, by April Danvers

This book comes out next Tuesday, and is the follow up to Danvers' book last year, called DREADNOUGHT, about a trans superhero in a future, but recognizable, world.

OMG, I LOVED IT. It was funny and engaging and heartbreaking and good. It contains possibly my favourite line in any superhero story ever. It manages to pick at the awkward spots in superhero stories without making you feel bad for liking them. I love all of the characters.

Highly, highly recommend this book (and the first one!). They are more hard proof that we don't have Superhero Fatigue, we have Straight White Dude Fatigue.

Book #46: Moxie, by Jen Mathieu

ANYWAY, so Moxie is a book about a girl whose mother used to be a rebel of sorts, until her dad died, and she moved back to her hometown to raise her baby daughter. Now Vivian, 16, keeps her mother's keepsakes to help her through bad days...and there are quite a few bad days, because her high school is something of a disaster.

MOXIE, in this case, is the name of anonymous zine that Viv starts to draw attention to the sexist boys and teachers at the school. It's mostly low-key protesting until someone anonymously submits a poster that says the captain of the football team tried to rape her at a party, and the principal (the captain's dad) covered it up.

This book was really good. It's kind of like a manual, but not boring. It teaches girls how to be smart and brave. It levels up constantly. And, somehow, it's even aware of its own whiteness. All without being precious or preachy. It's just really, really good. I highly recommend it.

I am exhausted and it's Monday.

Things to do/upcoming this week:

1. Turn in new student hiring paperwork.
2. Inform those who were not hired.
3. Finish GS reading for next week. 65% complete.
4. Book Club on Wednesday.
5. Update written help pages.
6. Finish reading/responding to weekly news articles.
7. Find/post next week's news article.
8. Start reviewing material for my annotated bib/research paper.
9. Make an appointment for help in finding materials for above.
10. Pick up niece+her husband from train and deliver to other train.
11. Dinner w/parents and in-town people.
12. Wash sheets and change bedding for in-town people.
13. Do dishes.
14. Put away dishes.
15. Clear off table.
16. Clean litterbox.
17. Make sure to do work social media 3 times this week. 1 left!
18. Make rice for lunches.
19. Attend work training.
20. Attend work training #2.
21. Get quarters for laundry.

Would that I could get a $9,000 COLA.

So apparently the cost of living in Nashville rose by $9,000 in the last year.

That is not a typo. There is not an extra zero added on to the end there.

So last year, White's AND I DARKEN, about the early life of a girl-Vlad the Impaler (called Lada Dracul) was WITHOUT CONTEST my favourite read of the year. It's was amazing on, like, every level.

Now I Rise is probably better.

I'm not JUST saying that because my favourite character gets more screen time, or because Kiersten wrote out the entirety of the siege of Constantinople and I LOVE ME A SIEGE, or because Lada was EVEN MORE INCREDIBLE THIS TIME, but obviously the fact that this book was essentially written for me specifically played a large part in why I loved it so much.

IT'S JUST SO GOOD.

I highly, highly, highly recommend both books, and I am super anxious about the third one (but in the good way...not the annoyingly manipulative cliff-hangery kind of way).

Flying sit spin: It actually flies now! There is a recognizable jump rather than what appears to be me having an awkwardly-timed spasm.



Back camel spin: Uhhhhhhh apparently this is now a thing? Kind of? I've been working on it for a week and somehow it's further along than the back scratch spin I've been working on for almost three years. Okay. I'll take it!



Broken leg spin: I adjusted the arms and in the process lost some of the knee bend, but on the plus side, I no longer look like I really have to pee, which is what I was going for. Yay!



Loop jump: BF spent almost an entire lesson on them with me a couple weeks ago and I'm much closer than I've ever been before. I think I'm two-footing the landing as a security blanket rather than because my weight isn't over the right side.

Back inside three turns: I can finally do these! Mostly! I can do the Silver moves pattern (forward outside three to back inside three) without any touch downs when the back turn is on the right foot. I can do the turn and get back to the axis without too much wobbling. The left back turn is...going to require work.

Other footwork: I have a consistent double twizzle on the left back inside edge, although the second one goes up to the toe. It's to the point where I'm trying pretty arms with it, anyway. Brackets, counters, and rockers are all pretty much where they were, maybe a bit cleaner. P taught me this thigh-burner of a rocker exercise that goes back outside (or inside) rocker, power pull, forward inside (or outside) rocker, power pull, repeat, all on one leg. I can do the rockers on one foot but have to put the free foot down to do the power pull part, probably because I still suck at checking exits to turns. I experimented with adding some extra footwork to my program, because I'm finishing a bit early now, but I think I need P to tell me what is actually accomplishable.
